"This Is The End" Review: Funny and Rewatchable. What More Could You Ask For?

This Is The End was funny. Really funny. I laughed. A lot. I would see it again. In theaters. This weekend. Are you going? Can I come? Seriously. We should see it together. We’ll both laugh through the whole movie. Then we can reference it and quote it later and laugh again. Doesn’t that sound fun?

In case you haven’t seen the trailer that I embedded above, I’ll do the thing where I describe the movie.

Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson play very exaggerated versions of themselves.  Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Rihanna, C-Tates and Aziz Ansari cameo to varying degrees. There’s a party at Franco’s house. Tons of actors from your favorite movies are there. The apocalypse hits. Almost everybody dies. Then you’re left with Franco, Hill, Rogen, Baruchel, McBride and Robinson dealing with the apocalypse and all the hilarity that comes form that situation.

Danny McBride steals the show. Remember Kenny Powers in season 1 of Eastbound & Down? Remember how fucking funny that Danny McBride was? Well Danny McBride playing a Kenny Powers-ish version of Danny McBride might be my favorite thing ever. One scene with McBride and Franco arguing made me laugh harder than anything since I honestly don’t remember. I was just so happy to have Danny McBride being awesome again.

There are Superbad and Pineapple Express reunions and the movie is full of self-referential humor. At 107-minutes it is a good length for a comedy and never drags. I’m sure they could have added another half hour of improv and action, but instead they keep it pretty tight. There are two pretty amazing surprises at the end that are set up early that I won’t ruin. The ending is absolutely delightful.

This Is The End features everything you would want from this cast. There is a Superbad reunion and they shoot a sequel to Pineapple Express. Jokes are made about the shitty movies they have made. There are demons with big demon dicks and jokes about masturbation and lots of mean things are said. It is quotable and funny. This Is The End can stand up next to any of the other good comedies these guys have made in the past.

So when are we going this weekend?
