Lance Kearse is the cousin of former NFL player Jevon Kearse. Being the cousin of The Freak and knowing how to catch a football is apparently enough to get you a tryout in the NFL. Lance Kearse played high school football as a freshman, but stopped playing to concentrate on basketball. Kearse played college basketball at VCU and Eckerd College and played professionally in Spain this past winter. After that season ended, he started working with a trainer and reached out to former NFL running back Earnest Graham. From The News-Press.com:
Graham watched Kearse work out and was committed to helping him. Graham called Ran Carthon, a teammate while with the University of Florida and an NFL scout, first with the Atlanta Falcons and now as the director of pro personnel with the St. Louis Rams.
Carthon referred Kearse to the Jaguars, and Jacksonville general manager David Caldwell liked Kearse enough to give him a second look this week.
Graham noted San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham as players who had very limited football experience before excelling in the NFL.
Kearse is at Jaguars minicamp trying to catch on as a tight end. The best reaction to Kearse trying to make the NFL 10 years after he last played comes the football coach at his old high school, Sam Sirianni Jr.
“Lance Kearse, the basketball player? Wow.”
In case you were curious, Lance Kearse is 6’5″, 240-pounds. Jevon Kearse last played in the 2009 season with the Titans. He finished his career with 74 sacks. [via news-press.com]
