Ryan Mathews, the oft-injured San Diego Chargers running back, was allegedly arrested Sunday night in San Diego following a bar fight, according to the website Examiner.com. The website doesn’t have a comment yet from police, but reports:
[UPDATE: The San Diego police say there was an incident at the bar, but the Chargers running back was NOT arrested.]
One witness, David Nieto aka Dj Wired, reported seeing a group of five Hispanic males inside the club proceed to speak to Mathews and another black male. All men including Mathews were described as intoxicated. The altercation took place outside the club gate where everyone smokes. Witnesses say words over a female were exchanged and Mathews reportedly knocked one male out cold and the individual was taken to UCSD medical hospital.
At this moment, nobody in the media relations office at the San Diego police department is picking up the phone. Then again, it isn’t even 6 am in San Diego. Worth noting: Early, breathless reports about MJD’s involvement in bar fight ended up with no charges being filed. So let’s not panic yet, Chargers fans. (Or better yet, Roger Goodell.)
Mathews, a star at Fresno State who was selected 12th overall by the Chargers in 2010, has had a rough start to his career. Between a litany of injuries and a fumbling problem, he’s been plagued by inconsistency. Mathews signed a 5-year, $26 million deal upon being drafted ($15 million guaranteed) but so far has just 14 touchdowns, 12 fumbles, and 2,476 yards in 38 games. [via Examiner via Eric Stangel]
