"Eat 'Em Up, Tigers" Fan Reportedly Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Comerica Park
By Kyle Koster
James Van Horn, the enthusiastic homeless man who has long been a staple outside Comerica Park in Detroit, was killed in a hit-and-run accident overnight a few blocks from the stadium, according to WDIV.
Police say Van Horn and another man were struck by a black car while crossing the street.
Known for his trademark “Eat ’em up, Tigers” chant, the 63-year-old relied on tips from fans coming to games. With his Fu Manchu mustache and ever-present Incredible Hulk hand — along with his vocal and persistent cheerleading — it was nearly impossible to miss Van Horn on gamedays.
He was a cult hero in the city, where few knew his real name but many could echo his go-to chant. During the Tigers’ run to the 2006 World Series, Van Horn estimated he received nearly $400 a night from fans.
Obviously, this is a very sad ending to his unique story.
