Gio Gonzalez and Jayson Werth Got Into a Shouting Match in the Dugout After Gonzalez Was Late Covering First [Video]

Gio Gonzalez and Jayson Werth had a disagreement over whether the disappointing season in 2013 is further evidence that they should have pitched Stephen Strasburg last year in the postseason. The tempers are flaring in Washington as they move closer to elimination from the postseason, and Werth was not happy (apparently) after Gonzalez didn’t exactly bust it over to first base to cover on a ball to the first base side.

Davey Johnson offered the following after the game:

"“Jayson sometimes can get a little vocal,” Johnson said. “He thought Gio was a little late covering first. And he was. But he falls toward third. With a bad back and falling toward third, he couldn’t get over there.”"

That’s funny, because it doesn’t exactly look like Gio was pulling a Danny Jackson (80’s Royals reference) and falling off to third base off balance. He just didn’t move after throwing the pitch. To be fair to Jayson Werth, he hasn’t seen a move that poor since he led a platoon at Fredericksburg and lit into Ambrose Burnside for his poor effort.
