Charlie Manuel Out as Phillies Manager According to Report [Update: Ryne Sandberg Takes Over on Interim Basis]

Philadelphia Phillies v Washington Nationals

Charlie Manuel is apparently out as Phillies manager. The team has scheduled a 2:30 press conference to announce something. Jim Salisbury reports the news is that Manuel is out. Whether or not he’s being fired or stepping aside remains to be seen.

There are numerous rumors flying Manuel will be replaced by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.

Manuel led the Phillies to the 2008 World Series crown. This would appear to be the first of a series of moves for the Phillies to (finally) start rebuilding.

[Update: Sandberg has been confirmed as Manuel’s replacement, but only on an interim basis through 2013. Leave it to Ruben Amaro Jr. to find a way to screw this up, as it looks like Manuel is taking the fall for the general manager’s terrible recent roster decisions.]
