Sounders Fans Conjure Images of the Four Horsemen for Clint Dempsey's Seattle Debut

Need to let your blood pressure drop after tonight’s insanely intense episode of “Breaking Bad”? Don’t feel like spending the rest of your night watching (or mocking) the VMAs? ESPN2 is offering up some excellent counter-programming in the form of the Seattle Sounders hosting the Portland Timbers in some hot MLS action.

Would telling you it’s Clint Dempsey’s home debut for the Sounders sweeten the pot?

You might not be too excited, but about 70,000 Seattle-area soccer fans are and have been counting down this game for weeks. Those fans showed how much this match meant by unfurling a two-tier Tifo with images of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Beneath the images read the caption: Build a Bonfire. (Timbers, fire … get it?)

Looking back if MLS and ESPN2 execs had a second chance to pitch this game they should have used the simple slogan: 100-percent Joey Fatone free.

The Sounders/Timbers rivalry might not bring out the most raw hatred in all of sports, but it does trigger loads of creativity between the opposing sets of fans.

The crowd of 67,000+ is the second-highest attendance for a standalone game in MLS history. It was also the third-highest attended soccer game worldwide this weekend. (Safe bet it was the only one with trashtalk via an Oregon Trail banner.) Seattle won 1-0 thanks to an Eddie Johnson header in the second half.
