Bryce Harper: His Brother's Mustache Remains a National Treasure

The last time we saw Bryan Harper, brother of Nationals’ second-year star Bryce Harper, was at the Home Run Derby in July at Citi Field. Don’t remember Bryan Harper? You certainly remember his glorious, Rollie Fingers-inspired mustache.

The elder Harper’s mustache is still going in all its glory — in fact it’s growing longer — as he toils as a pitcher for Class A Hagerstown Suns in the South Atlantic League. Harper, a lefty, is 5-1 with a 4.06 ERA. Hitters are batting just .194 against him in 44 innings.

It looks like there’s still a long way to go for Harper to join his famous brother in Washington. It would be nice if Bryan Harper eventually got the call. It’s been far too long since we had a truly great bit of facial hair on a MLB mound. The days of Al Hrabosky, Goose Gossage and Bruce Sutter were a long time ago.

There’s always the other way to look at Harper’s wax-requiring ‘stache: he’s only growing it to get people to look at it and talk about it (and in fairness, post about it). I can hear you mumbling the words “hipster” and “douche” under your breath. [H/T the Score]
