Fans of the Phillies and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — there has to be a decent amount of crossover there — will be thrilled to find out that Chase Utley has finally taken the time to respond to the heartfelt, albeit extremely creepy “love” letter Mac wrote to him five years ago. The letter asked if the second baseman would have a catch with him. (Mac also complimented Utley on his hair and asked if he had a good relationship with his father.)
In this week’s installment of “Phillies Mailbag,” Ultey finally answers Mac’s letter. Unfortunately, the second baseman is too busy to have a catch with Mac. He does end on a positive note, writing fans like Mac make his life a “grand slam.”
Here’s the original clip from the show which ran during the 2009 episode, “The World Series Defense.”
Utley and teammate Ryan Howard appeared on the show in 2010, but didn’t interact with Mac, instead watching as Charlie and Dennis pounded beers (and later wine) to Springsteen’s “Glory Days” at a charity fundraiser.
It’s a good thing Ruben Amaro Jr. didn’t trade Utley before the trade deadline in July, or else the chance to answer to a fictional character on a basic cable comedy probably never would’ve arisen.
Anyways, “Sunny” is back this Wednesday with new episodes on the hip new cable channel for young people, FXX. (The extra X makes it much more appealing to the kids.)
