Mack Brown Passed on Recruiting Jameis Winston and Wanted to Turn RG3 and Johnny Manziel into Defensive Backs [UPDATE]

Florida State v Pittsburgh

Mack Brown, the embattled 62-year old Texas Longhorns coach, was exposed once again Monday night as a relic of a bygone era.

Florida State redshirt freshman Jameis Winston, who we’ve been hyping since February, had a memorable debut on national television, dismembering Pitt with ruthless efficiency – 25-of-27, 356 yards, four TDs – in a 41-13 rout. It was a performance that’ll vault Winston into the Heisman Trophy discussion. Fair or not, Winston will instantly be compared to Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater and RG3 of the Redskins (all three are black!) and probably even Johnny Manziel (dazzling campaign as a redshirt freshman).

After the game, Winston talked to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, and there’s where Mack Brown comes into this.

Probably not what Texas fans want to hear, especially since the last two Heisman Trophy winners, RG3 and Manziel, were both recruited by Brown … to play defensive back in Austin. They passed, matriculated to Baylor and Texas A&M, respectively, and the rest is history.

No pressure, David Ash.

[UPDATE: Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports tracked down Winston's high school coach, who said he called Texas "four or five times" and never heard back. And that Winston was "definitely" interested in the Longhorns."]

That rustling you hear in the distance? Deep-pocketed Texas donors cobbling together millions to money whip Nick Saban into leaving Alabama.
