Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney missed Sunday’s loss to Liverpool due to an “injury” suffered during training. As the day went on, more details emerged how Rooney had cut his forehead in a challenge with teammate Phil Jones. The injury was severe enough to sideline him for England’s two upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Since he’s sitting out Rooney is getting a ton of flack from those ever-so-manly England fans who doubt the severity of the injury. Perhaps they think he cut himself in anger after his move away from Manchester United to Chelsea was denied late in the transfer window.
Rooney took the Kobe Bryant approach and posted these blood-soaked photos and message on his official Facebook page to silence the doubters:
Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the 2 games. There’s nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I’m sure people will see from these images the reason why I won’t be able to play.
Chin up Wayne. The cut may keep you out of the England squad but your expensive hair plugs appear to be relatively unscathed.
Still, this remains a bit of a missed opportunity for Rooney, who once covered himself in mock blood for a Nike ad during the 2006 World Cup. Guess he’ll never have his Terry Butcher moment for the Three Lions.
On second thought, that’s probably a good thing.
