Lavonte David Penalty Gives Jets Stunning Win Over Tampa, 18-17
By Jason McIntyre
Lavonte David, the talented 2nd year linebacker from Nebraska, made a mistake he’ll never forget. With Tampa trying to cling to a 2-point lead with less than :10 left in the 4th quarter, David foolishly hit New York QB Geno Smith out of bounds – a 15-yard penalty. The late hit pushed the Jets into field goal range, and Nick Folk drilled a 48-yarder to give the Jets an improbable 17-15 triumph.
Smith, who at times looked like a rookie – a bad fumble, a bad interception – actually finished with decent stats: competed 63 percent of his passes, 256 yards through the air, 47 yards rushing, and a TD toss to Kellen Winslow. Sure, he was sacked five times, BUT HE HAD A GAME-WINNING DRIVE!
Thanks, Lavonte David.
Patriots. Jets. Thursday night. For 1st place in the AFC East.
