Referee Calls Missed UCLA Field Goal Good Because He Wasn't Watching the Ball

Nebraska was beating UCLA 21-3 in the 2nd quarter of their game today. UCLA kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn attempted a 46-yard field goal that missed wide right. While the ball clearly did not pass through the uprights, the official standing below the upright – whose lone job is to look up in the air and see where the ball goes – threw up his hands to indicate a good field goal. Replays showed that call was bad which isn’t so surprising because the replay also showed the referee not watching the ball.
