Sunderland Manager Paolo Di Canio Confronts Fans in Bizarre Display Following Loss
By Mike Cardillo
Paolo Di Canio might want to get his résumé, err, CV ready. His Sunderland team lost to West Brom 3-0 Saturday, which kept them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with a single point through five matches. Former Sunderland player Stephane Sessegnon scored what proved to be the eventual winner.
After the game, the controversial Italian manager walked toward the traveling Sunderland supporters and stopped atop the penalty area. He proceeded to make a series of bizarre gestures in the direction of the fans. This is even more head-scratching than Di Canio’s decision earlier in the year to ban cell phones, singing and even ketchup from the club.
Was Di Canio asking for more time? Did he agree with the fans that the team stinks? Was screaming out to get fired from a mess he created? Was he trying to deflect the attention from his team’s embarrassing performance?
So many questions.
This Sunderland fan’s reaction probably sums it up:
American fans might want to make note of this since this is the club Jozy Altidore transferred to over the summer. [H/T @sluggahjells]
