Tim Howard wound up a winner and a loser on Sergio Agüero’s second-half penalty kick during Everton’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday. Howard, the American No. 1, pushed away the penalty shot for a save. Problem is he knocked it into the post where it then ricocheted off his head for a most unfortunate of own goals.

FIFA rules stipulate (via ESPN researcher extraordinaire Paul Carr) shots on-target that rebound off the frame and hit a defender or goalie shouldn’t be ruled own goals. The Premier League’s rules interpretations are, of course, different.

It was Everton’s first loss in seven Premier League games this season. The United States is back in action Friday night against Jamaica.
