Paul Aguilar helped Mexico put one big foot forward toward qualifying for next summer’s World Cup with his first-half goal vs. New Zealand in Wednesday’s World Cup playoff from the Azteca Stadium. El Tri had controlled the match against an over-matched All Whites squad, so the goal was coming. The game was only 0-0 for as long as it was thanks to some solid keeping by Glen Moss.

Moss, though, knocked into his own defender allowing Aguilar to fire at the open net.

Mexico added another goal to make it 2-0 through Raul Jimenez, El Tri’s unlikely hero in qualifying last month, just before halftime.

The dream of Mexico failing to qualify for the World Cup was fun … while it lasted.

Sigh.

At least Miguel Herrera — El Tri’s fourth coach in 2013 — is having fun.
