Smoke Bomb Costs English Soccer Team Game-Winning Goal
By Mike Cardillo
Saturday Barnet played Cambridge United in England’s Conference Premier — the fifth division of soccer in the country. Riveting stuff, right?
Barnet appeared to have a stoppage-time winner when the ball bounced off the goalie and off George Sykes into the net. Only problem? Somebody set off a smoke bomb behind the goal and the linesman couldn’t see it and awarded a corner kick instead.
Seems clear as day watching the video, however Sykes didn’t see all that upset in the postgame interview and admitted he couldn’t see either. So fair play to him, as they say.
