As shown in the video above, Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton pulled down Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik and knocked him out on the ice. According to CBS’ Eye on Hockey, this cheap shot was in response to some prior chippyness between the two teams earlier in the game:
The game had been chippy from the get-go with tempers flaring, but took a turn for the worst after [James] Neal clocked Marchand with a knee to the head while [Brad] Marchand was kneeling on the ice

That scrum was apparently immediately followed by Thornton’s dirty hit, which left Orpik laying motionless and carried off the ice on a stretcher:
