Curtis Granderson Introduced as a Met, Says Fans Have Told Him, "True New Yorkers are Mets Fans"
By Mike Cardillo
Curtis Granderson, tell us how you really feel. The veteran outfielder was introduced Tuesday afternoon officially as a member of the New York Mets. Whether he meant to do it or not, Granderson took a backhanded swipe at his former team, the Yankees, uttering the phrase:
"“A lot of the people I’ve met in New York have always said that true New Yorkers are Mets fans,” Granderson said at the news conference. “So I’m excited to get a chance to see them all out there.”"
That’s certainly one way to endear yourself to your new team — and make some back page headlines in the process. Figure Yankees fans are trying to contain their laughter, or bewilderment.
It’s very possible Granderson was trying to get Mets fans, who’ve been so downtrodden and pessimistic in recent seasons, fired up.
The Mets and Yankees play each other from May 12-15. It’s a safe guess this phrase might get mentioned a few times between now and then.
