It’s been just over a year since former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed himself and his girlfriend. Yesterday, Sam Mellinger reported in the Kansas City Star that Belcher’s family requested for his body to be exhumed, and that his brain will be examined.

Dr. Bennet Omalu, who appears prominently in the book and PBS Frontline documentary League of Denial, says in the story that he “would bet one month’s salary that (Belcher) had CTE.”

While it would have been more ideal for scientific discovery if the brain were examined immediately following the tragic incident, Omalu has previously found “clear evidence of Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases” from bodies that had been inhumed for more time than Belcher’s.
