Tony Dungy-to-the-Detroit Lions Rumors Started After This Photo Surfaced

Tony Dungy on the Dan Patrick Show Friday, when asked about the Detroit Lions head coach opening: “I will tell you this, Dan, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions … That’s the job I would want [given the openings]. I think they’re closest to the Super Bowl. You look for a franchise quarterback in this day and age, you want to have a passing game because this game is all about passing, and you want people who can rush the passer and protect the lead. Detroit’s got all that.”

Tony Dungy, maybe, this morning: On a plane to Detroit? That’s what some guy is claiming.

The photo appears to be Dungy, the NBC football studio analyst, but you can only see half of him. Dungy’s doppelganger? A hoax?

Is it possible Detroit Lions ownership heard Dungy raving about the franchise, and instantly pounced on him over the weekend? Sure. But at 58, could Dungy be lured out of retirement to coach a team with a surfeit of stars? This is probably nothing … or it could be biggest NFL offseason happening so far. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press texted Dungy, who said he’s in Detroit for “totally non-football” reasons.

Dungy last coached the Colts in 2008, and his last game was an overtime playoff loss to the San Diego Chargers. It’ll probably be Ken Whisenhunt who gets the job. [H/T Isaac]
