Ernests Gulbis Gave Us the First Angry Tennis Racket Smash of 2014

Ernest Gulbis racket smash at Australian Open

The Australian Open apparently started over the weekend. Forgive me if I had no idea tennis’s first Grand Slam Event of 2014 was underway. (My excuse? I blame the non-stop advertising for chain pizza and Subway during the NFL playoffs for rotting away what’s left of my non-ADD riddled brain.)

Ernests Gulbis, the No. 23 seed Down Under, got a little pissed off during his match with Juan Monaco. The Latvian, as tennis players are wont to do, smashed his racket into the court in frustration. He didn’t get a lot of lift on the bounce, so this smash is only receiving a 4.5/10 on the judge’s scale, but he does get credit for the first high-profile racket assault of 2014.

Gulbis won 1-6 6-4 7-6 (4) 6-2, if you’re wondering. [H/T Beyond the Baseline]
