Lionel Messi Channeled Ron Burgundy, But Teary-Eyed Cristiano Ronaldo Won the Ballon d'Or

Lionel Messi is kind of a big … wait I’ll stop. I can’t do it. Essentially everyone with a Twitter account paying attention to the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday made the same joke: Lionel Messi’s tuxedo looks very similar the won wore by Ron Burgundy in the ubiquitous advertisements for “Anchorman 2″ (and Dodge trucks). If you’re wondering, that’s his girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo next to Messi.

Despite his bold fashion choice, Messi was denied his fifth straight Ballon d’Or, losing out to rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The usually steely-eyed Ronaldo was caught up in emotion after taking home the award for the world’s best player a second time.

The Ronaldo/Messi rivalry isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. This year it was fair to honor Ronaldo, who was excellent for both Real Madrid and almost single-handedly carried Portugal into the World Cup. Ronaldo finished 2013 with 69 goals in 59 goals. His 15 Champions League goals were the most in a calendar year. For what it’s worth, U.S. National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann voted for neither player in his Top 3.

I’ll offer this: Messi’s facial expression rarely changes whether it be on the red carpet or on the bench during Saturday’s Barcelona/Atletico Madrid match.

Maybe for his next trick, Messi can grow a mustache.
