Gordon, who has the closing speed of a shark, soared and swallowed the dunk attempt with both arms. No foul. Clean block.
A distant 4th among all the awesome freshman at the start of the college basketball season, Gordon – primarily because of his defense – has wedged his way into the discussion as perhaps the most valuable of the rookie quartet (Tyler Ennis of Syracuse is a freshman, is awesome, and is indispensable. He’s just not a 2014 Top 10 pick like the other four.) Gordon might have established himself as the best perimeter defender in the nation with strong showings so far against Glenn Robinson Jr, Jabari Parker, and late last week against UCLA’s Kyle Anderson in a narrow Wildcats win.
Gordon mostly lives above the rim on offense, but his defense – along with upside as an offensive player – is what is going to make him a coveted Top 10 lottery pick. Gordon is averaging a modest 12.2 ppg while shooting just 46 percent from the line. In my November mock draft I had him going 7th to the Lakers.
