More tragic news from the world of college football: 21-year old Arkansas State football player Markel Owens was shot and killed while trying to defend his family during a robbery. According to the Jackson Sun, Owens’ mother was shot, but survived; his stepfather was shot and killed.

Police said robbers had followed Owens’ stepfather, Johnny Shivers, 36, home to his duplex at 770 Walker Road.

“I think Mr. Owens had just arrived home minutes before this happened,” Miller said. “After interviewing the witnesses about what happened, we believe there was an initial struggle between Shivers and one of the men. We believe Owens attempted to protect his family or defend his mother and stepfather. He could have perhaps saved his mother’s life.”

Owens, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound lineman, appeared in four games for the Red Wolves in 2013.

Earlier this week, a 43-year old Iowa State assistant coach died. [via Jackson Sun]
