Wade Phillips, like everyone in the Houston Texans organization, had a rough season. After the football lifer took over as interim coach before Week 15, the team dropped their final three games — before that they’d already lost 11 straight — and there was plenty of collateral damage to go around.
Nevertheless, Phillips’ defense performed pretty well statistically all year — they ranked 7th in total yardage and 8th in points given up; they weren’t wonderful or anything, but you could see why Wade would be a bit disillusioned that he hasn’t even been given the opportunity to interview for work elsewhere:
Disappointed not even an interview after 7 straight full seasons of top 10 D with 3 different teams. Last 5 times as D C= playoffs1st yr

Hmm. Any particular theories as to why that may be the case?

Phillips is 66 years old, and it’s not so farfetched to believe that his age is the single biggest reason that nobody’s calling him. It’s at least a little curious that teams with matador defenses like the Vikings, Bears, or even his former Cowboys wouldn’t even consider bringing him into the building. If Phillips can’t find a coordinator position, MMQB’s Greg Bedard theorized that Green Bay could be a possible landing spot.
