Yulia Lipnitskaya – or Julia Lipnitskaia, or Юлия Вячеславовна Липницкая if you’re Russian – is leading the Ladies Short program in the Figure Skating Team event at the Sochi Olympics. Lipnitskaia, who turns 16 in June, went out in her Olympic debut in front of a home crowd and skated what looked like a flawless program. Judges gave her a 72.90. (USA’s Ashley Wagner in fourth with a 63.10.)
Now for a confession – I don’t know what any of the words in the preceding paragraph mean. Except for the part about her age. As someone who doesn’t really know anything about figure skating, I can only say her performance was sick. Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir both seemed especially impressed with the 15-year old and that’s good enough for me. I mean, how does a non-CGI human being do something like that?
