Ronda Rousey returns to the Octagon on February 22nd to defend her women’s bantamweight title against Sara McMann. If all goes well, Rousey will move on to shoot some movies before her next title defense. One thing that shouldn’t be glossed over – and I’m sure the UFC will make a point of mentioning this between now and the time Dana White puts the championship belt around the waist of someone next Saturday night – is the fact that this is a fight between two women who have both represented the United States in the Olympics.

Rousey participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics at 17 and then in 2008, Rousey became the first American woman to win a medal in judo with a bronze finish at the Bejing games. Sara McMann won a silver medal in wrestling for the United States at the 2004 games in the 63 kg weight class. As Rousey talks about in the video above – from MMA Junkie – these are two world class athletes who chose mixed martial arts after reaching the top of their respective sports.
