Ron Washington Once Paid a $200 Fine With a Box Full of Pennies

Image (1) ron-washington.jpg for post 67294Ron Washington was ejected from a Spring Training game in 2011. Apparently, a Spring Training ejection carries a $100 fine. Since there wasn’t really a locker room to hang out in and watch the game, Washington decided to stay in the dugout. MLB doubled the fine. Washington decided to pay the fine in pennies. From the Star-Telegram:

Washington responded by filling a box with $200 in pennies and mailing it to Bob Watson, MLB vice president in charge of discipline. Cost to mail it to New York: About $45.

Watson called after receiving the box.

Watson: “And you just had $200 in pennies hanging around? Washington: “Yes. Bob, I didn’t have my checkbook. I wasn’t trying to be funny. Now go to the bank and put that in the [change] machine and get your $200.”

Ron Washington is my new hero. The extra $45 for shipping is a total boss move. The only way this could have been cooler was if Washington showed up at MLB headquarters and dumped the pennies on Watson’s desk like Kramer trying to buy calzones.
