Scout.com’s Longhorn Digest conducted an anonymous survey of Texas high school coaches. It appears Charlie Strong has some ground to make up. All four coaches, who were granted anonymity, listed Texas as the third-best program in-state right now, behind Baylor and Texas A&M. Here is one coach…

"I hate to say it but they are third behind A&M and Baylor. Because they are Texas it is an easy gap to close if there is any. I think there is a bigger gap between Texas and Texas A&M. But that can close in a number of ways. It will be interesting to see how A&M responds without Johnny Football, and it will be interesting to see how Texas responds with Strong.”"

Texas is still Texas. But the last time they were a football “power” the iPad did not exist.  With SEC encroachment and a number of vibrant coaches in-state (not to mention two strong programs in Oklahoma), expecting the school to recruit for itself at peak Mack Brown levels may be a tad optimistic.

The Longhorns were shut out of the top eight players in-state in 2014. Kevin Sumlin already has five of the state’s top 20 on board for 2015.
