John Daly isn’t playing in the Masters this week, however the popular golfer is still in Augusta hanging out in his bus selling all sorts of merch outside a Hooters. The Guardian caught up with Daly and reflected on his hard-drinking days of the 90s, among other topics. Daly says he’s been sober for six years and lost a bunch of weight via lapband surgery.
However he’s still slamming down a ton of Diet Coke on a daily basis, but about half of what he consumed pre-surgery:
“The band won’t allow me to drink as many. If I don’t have ice, I can’t drink it. I can’t have it straight because of the carbonation. I have to drink it slowly and not out of a can, I need some ice. I used to have 26-28 cans a day. Now I have 10-12 at the most.”
That’s enough DC to impress anyone this side of Mike Francesa.
The Guardian story also touches on Daly home-schooling his 11-year-old son (until high school so he can play team sports), his 40-cigarette a day habit and his lack of a fitness routine compared to the younger golfers coming up today:
“Some guys want to do a little more cardio training; I can’t see me being allowed to smoke a cigarette on a treadmill. I don’t think they will let me into the gym if I do that. Will they?”
Perhaps, if he’s serious about hitting the gym, Daly ought to consider Planet Fitness. It’s only $9.99 per month and bills itself as the “Judgment Free Zone.”
