The Washington Redskins get most of the press in this regard, but it’s worth noting that there’s some pressure on the Cleveland Indians to change their name, and especially their caricatural mascot, Chief Wahoo. This debate was summed up in a nearly perfect, well-circulated photo last week when the website Cleveland Frowns introduced an exuberant fan dressed in red face to a Native American.
The site provided thorough context for the interaction yesterday, and went over the relevant parties’ reasoning in disagreeing with each other’s position. (“It’s about baseball,” the Indians fan rationalized.) Olbermann went through the background of the story, and the historical origins of the Cleveland Indians’ name, and what the franchise should do if it truly wants to honor its history.
