Matt Maloney played parts of six seasons in the NBA, including three with the Rockets during Houston’s Charles Barkley era. Maloney averaged 9.8 points and 3.7 assists his rookie year and started all 82 games on the Rockets team that went to the Western Conference Finals with Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. It was all downhill from there.
In 1999, the Rockets waived Maloney just a year into a 7-year contract. He ended up making $15,433,760 of his $17,389,676 career earnings from the Rockets after they cut him. Over the weekend, someone spotted a dude at Coachella wearing a Maloney jersey. Wait. Is that Matt Maloney? Keith Closs would be proud.
