It’s officially World Cup season when Nike dusts off its new ad campaign for the tournament. The Swoosh’s latest is, as per usual, innovative and awesome. Seemingly even important player is in the spot, except we swap in Zlatan Ibrahimovic even though Sweden didn’t qualify, for Lionel Messi — an Adidas man.
Not to spoil anything but I’d pay to watch a 15 minute conversation (in Italian) between Kobe Bryant and Andrea Pirlo. Fox executives, if you’re reading this: hire these two to call the Champions League final next month.
One minor caveat, this ad feels a little similar to an Adidas campaign from the 2006 World Cup, albeit on steroids. And yeah, the Adidas spot didn’t have one of the kids playing pick-up soccer morphing into the Incredible Hulk. That one didn’t have the lovely Irina Shayk, aka Ronaldo’s girlfriend in it, either. Advantage: Phil Knight.
