James Shields reached the 1,500 Strikeout milestone on Tuesday. With a 4-1 lead in the top of the 6th, Shields struck out Troy Tulowitzki to become the 195th pitcher to reach 1,500 career strikeout plateau. The crowd – all 15,914 of them – gave Shields a standing ovation and catcher Salvador Perez asked for the ball back. You know, so Sheilds can keep it in his trophy case and remember this special moment from his career.
Shields had no clue what was happening. He wanted to pitch. He seemed confused and annoyed by whatever or whoever was holding things up. Eventually, Shields turned around and saw on the scoreboard that he was the reason for the delay. Then, for a brief moment, he broke character, tipped his hat and even smiled. It was a jarring experience for everyone involved.
