Arjen Robben Scored a Brilliant Solo Goal vs. Spain, Basked in the Spotlight
By Mike Cardillo
Arjen Robben, world soccer’s No. 1 solo artist, scored this fantastic goal to put the Dutch ahead 2-1 over Spain in their World Cup match. Robben expertly controlled Daley Blind’s pass and proceeded to make Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos look like rank amateurs. Dutch coach Louis van Gaal plan to use Robben as a striker next to Robin van Persie — both star players have scored jaw-dropping goals — paid off.
Robben’s goal was vaguely reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp’s brilliant tally vs. Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
Robben celebrated his moment of brilliance appropriately, basking — alone — in the spotlight.
