Alex Torres, the Padres reliever, became the first MLB pitcher to wear a protective cap on the mound in the eighth inning versus the Dodgers on Saturday night. Given the cap’s, um, lack of subtlety, one really must applaud Torres for taking the plunge — it honestly might be more aesthetically pleasing to wear a batting helmet out there. Nevertheless, this is a good first step, and hopefully this technology will improve now that it has a base from which to start.
