Cristiano Ronaldo’s pinpoint cross to Silvestre Varela in the fifth minute of stoppage time in Manaus served as a cruel reminder that patriotic red, white and blue costumes and strategically positioned cameras ready to capture joyous celebrations from sea-to-shining-sea don’t matter all that much when the best player in the world (not named Lionel Messi) gets the ball at his feet with seconds remaining on the clock.
