Tim Howard, as we know, had a remarkable day for United States in its (gut-wrenching) 2-1 loss to Belgium on Tuesday in the Round of 16 of the World Cup. Howard is being hailed a national hero for the display, which makes sense because without him the game — as you can see in the GIF above — might have finished 5-0 is Belgium was a little more accurate with its tournament-high 39 shots.
As I wrote yesterday, 16 saves (a new World Cup record) isn’t exactly something to crow about, as it shows how much the rest of your team was over-matched — despite the U.S. somehow owning more possession (52 percent) to Belgium.
Do you look at this GIF unfold showing the onslaught of Belgian shots and shake your head in amazement that they still had a chance to win via Chris Wondolowski’s terrible miss in the 93rd minute, or do you curse the team’s inability to string passes together and relieve some of the pressure? The fairest way is probably some combination of the two, although as we know you’re not allowed to have a middle ground opinion nowadays.
