Derek Jeter is apparently retiring after this season ends. Who knew? First I’m hearing about it. Anyway, Jeter is on the same Yankees retirement tour that Mariano Rivera took in 2013. At every stop he gets some kind of dumb personalized gift that he will never ever use again. As a more practical gift, this Jordan Brand tribute to Jeter will air before his first at-bat in Tuesday’s All-Star game.
It features notable New Yorkers, Jordan Brand athletes (Maya Moore, Carmelo Anthony, Tiger Woods), former teammates (Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettite), celebrities (Jay-Z, Rudy Giuliani, Spike Lee) and opponents (Red Sox fans, Mets with their faces blurred) tipping their caps to Jeter. Depending on how you feel about Jeter and the Yankees, you will either love or hate the ad.
Personally, I like it. Jeter has been a part of baseball for just about as long as I have been conscious of the sport. While I’ve spent most of my adult life rooting against the Yankees, you know… yada yada yada respect Jeter. Whatever your feelings, this is an effective and affecting spot. Especially, if you’re interested in seeing how dorky some people look tipping their caps.
