Tottenham Players Hold Wrigley Field First Pitch Contest, Goes About as Well as Expected

Tottenham Hotspur, everyone’s favorite English Premier League club, is embarking on a North American summer tour where it will play MLS teams in Seattle, Chicago and Toronto. During the club’s stop in Chicago one lucky Spurs player will get to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game. The club held a competition on it’s official online channel to see who’ll be the lucky man to toe the slab at Wrigley Field.

The results … well … they go about as well as you’d expect for a bunch of Europeans who’ve probably never thrown a baseball. 50 Cent, Carly Rae Jepsen, Nick Young,  et al might want to take notes, however, because it could have been a lot worse.

Highlights include Michael Dawson saying he’ll use an underhand rounders-style throw only to attempt this would-be knuckleball:

German midfielder Lewis Holtby’s whistling and windup show he’s probably at least seen one baseball game in his life. Maybe.

Iceland native Gylfi Sigurdsson claiming throwing out the first pitch at Wrigley would be a “dream come true” also made me laugh. Harry Kane, likely fresh from the beaches of Ibiza, provides a little unintentional comedy, too. This video also serves as further proof former American international keeper Brad Friedel has probably spent a little bit too much time across the pond, if his Ohio-meets-Liverpool accent hasn’t done so already.
