The Panthers plan to sit Cam Newton and start Derek Anderson for this afternoon’s game versus the Buccaneers, Fox’s Jay Glazer reports. Glazer does clarify that Newton could play today, but that the team is worried that a hit could sideline the quarterback for 3-4 weeks, and that the onus is on Newton to prove that he’s able to protect himself.

According to JoeBucsFan.com, Ronde Barber, a Fox analyst and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, said on Sirius XM Radio that Anderson attended production meetings with the network’s broadcast team (Newton was there as well); PFT notes that backups usually aren’t included in these meetings. Was it unbecoming of Barber to spill the beans?

Our site will continue to monitor if Newton is active later today.

Update: Cam Newton is INACTIVE today. Derek Anderson will get the start.
