Conan O'Brien Sang The Simpsons' Monorail Song at the Hollywood Bowl

In late August FXX ran all 552 episodes of The Simpsons over a record-setting 12-day marathon. For better or worse (no wait, definitely worse) I watched a very unhealthy portion of the marathon and wrote about it last month. In my (admittedly warped mind) Season Four’s “Marge vs. the Monorail” is the peak of 20th Century Western civilization, and noted as much in that 2,500+ word slog.

Anyways, over weekend at the Hollywood Bowl members of The Simpsons‘ cast performed some of the show’s musical numbers. The highlight came in the form of Conan O’Brien, donning Lyle Lanley’s staw hat and signing “The Monorail Song” — performing it as a tribute to the late, great Phil Hartman whose unmistakable voice made The Simpsons so great in the early years in whatever role he filled be it regulars like Troy McClure or Lionel Hutz or even a one-off character like Tom in “Brother From the Same Planet.”

Oh right it bears noting, O’Brien wrote the Monorail episode during his stint on the show’s writing staff. He also penned “New Kid on the Block” and “Homer Goes to College.” (Take that, dean!)

I’m not afraid to admit I’ve watched this video bout 17 times already.

Longtime Simpsons guest star Jon Lovitz stepped in for Hartman to sing “Stop the Planet of the Apes I Want to Get Off.”
