Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) will introduce legislation to end the NFL’s tax-exempt status, according to Benjamin Freed. This move appears to be most related to the Washington name change issue, though recent events on domestic violence and child abuse fronts certainly have raised attention, including in Washington. Cantwell also said that the “NFL needs to join the rest of America in 21st century.”

Cantwell was also part of a group of female Senators who sent a letter to the NFL about the Ray Rice situation. “If you violently assault a woman, you shouldn’t get a second chance to play football in the NFL. The NFL’s current policy sends a terrible message to players, fans and all Americans that even after committing a horrific act of violence, you can quickly be back on the field,” the letter stated.
