Jozy Altidore Moved into a Fifth-Place Tie on the USMNT Scoring Charts with Goal vs. Honduras
By Mike Cardillo
Jozy Altidore is in the midst of another disastrous season with his English club team, Sunderland. Even so, the American striker is still an important player for Jurgen Klinsmann’s U.S. National Team. Tuesday night vs. Honduras the 24-year-old scored in the first half in Boca Raton Fla, to put the U.S. ahead 1-0, cutting around a defender and beating the keeper at the near post after collecting a pass from Michael Bradley off his chest.
The goal was his 24th for the United States:
The U.S. lost Altidore minutes into their 2014 World Cup campaign with a hamstring injury earlier this year. Klinsmann didn’t have a like-for-like replacement in his 23-man roster for Altidore and suffered for it as the tournament wore on.
Although Altidore’s club situation at Sunderland is tenuous — to put it mildly — it’s not the most pressing issue for the National Team since it doesn’t play a significant game that counts until next summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. If nothing else Altidore remains pretty good when it comes to scoring against CONCACAF opposition.
