Irish Dudes Watch Baseball for the First Time, Wonder How Teams Score Points?

Baseball is a thoroughly American sport, a pastime if you will. Even if you’re one of the increasing number of people who don’t follow baseball religiously or watch the World Series each October, chances are you have a passing knowledge of how the game itself works.

People from the Republic of Ireland? Well, their baseline knowledge of baseball is much, much lower. This video of a couple guys watching baseball for the first time during Game 1 of the World Series is enjoyable and includes such phrases as:

  • “4-for-9 with RISP? … Risp, isn’t that when you can’t say your words.”
  • “Hunter Pence … these lads have the coolest names.”
  • “What’s with all the swinging of the t-shirts?
  • “How do they get a point?”
  • “I was really hoping to see some fast-paced action, dingers.” (This guy is obviously a fan of The Simpsons.)

All of this is in good fun. Taking a step back, it is rather ridiculous how many graphics are on the screen during the game and how complicated they’d seem for someone watching the sport for the first time — stuff the typical American sports fan takes for granted.

Perhaps Stephen and I will hang out some time and watch a hurling match and film our reactions as a counterpoint to this video.
