Joe Maddon Offered to Buy Everyone a Shot and a Beer at His First Cubs Press Conference

Newly hired Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon held his introductory press conference Monday at The Cubby Bear, a bar located across the street from Wrigley Field. Even though he might have looked a lot like Will Ferrell’s impression of Harry Caray, Maddon did his best to charm the Chicago press corps by talking about winning, cards “dripping with analytics” and all sorts of other rosy ideas which might help the team end its World Series drought which dates back to 1908.

Oh right, Maddon’s overt courtship of the Chicago (and national baseball) media concluded with an offer of free alcohol at the end of the presser, with a nod to his Hazelton, Pa., roots:

Ethically, it’s probably not a good idea for anyone in the media to take Maddon’s offer up. Plus, it’s not easy to file a coherent story after a pop and a shot.

Here’s guessing Maddon must have watched Caddyshack a few times on road trips.
