No, that headline you read before clicking on this post is not the name of some newly discovered B-side from Flight of the Conchords. Instead it’s an actual, reported story form The New Zealand Herald.

Here’s the gist of what happened. Callum Robertson-Barnes, 17, couldn’t find his running shoes ahead of the Kerikeri half-marathon over the weekend. He assumes he lost them on the bus during a school trip. Robertson-Barnes decided to wear his Crocs (with socks) for the race and finished 10th out of nearly 1,200 runners despite wearing footwear most-famous for a) Internet scorn and b) being seen permanently affixed to the feet of celebrity chef Mario Batali.

Robertson-Barnes finished the race with a time of 1:23:03. As for the Crocs used as running shoes? Robertson-Barnes gave them a semi-ringing endorsement when asked if he’d wear them again in a race, “Definitely, just watch out for the transponder, and wear some socks.”

And now commence the (inevitable) debate as to which are more annoying when spotted on the feet of people other than yourself: Crocs or Toe Shoes?
