On Friday night, Yale shocked the college basketball world by knocking off UConn. That upset pales in comparison to the one just pulled off by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Today’s game was the first time they’d ever played a Top 25 team. And they certainly made it memorable.

The Highlanders went into Ann Arbor and beat 17th-ranked Michigan, 72-70.

NJIT, the only independent in Division I basketball, shot 58.7 percent from the field and sank 11 of 16 three-point attempts. Sophomore guard Damon Lynn led the way with 20 points, including six three-pointers.

NJIT’s basketball history is full of historic achievements, none of them particularly impressive. The Highlanders went 1-30 in 2008-09 and posted a 51-game losing streak during that stretch.
