Phoenix Suns Used a Five-Guard Lineup Against the Charlotte Hornets
The Phoenix Suns beat the Charlotte Hornets, 111-106, on Wednesday night. The Suns, who had lost 6 straight coming into the game, got off to a slow start. Down 14-points with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter (33-47) Marcus Morris went to the bench leaving the Suns with the following lineup:
PG – Isaiah Thomas – 5’9″
SG – Eric Bledsoe – 6’1″
SF – Goran Dragic 6’3″
PF – Gerald Green – 6’8″
C – P.J. Tucker – 6’6″
In the clip above you can see that all five players naturally spread out around the perimeter. The lineup played until Markieff Morris entered the game for Isaiah Thomas with 3:19 left in the half. In the 4+ minutes with what was basically a five-guard lineup, the Suns outscored the Hornets 13-9 and cut the lead to 10.
Al Jefferson, one of the most talented offensive big men in the NBA, finished the game with 28 points, but didn’t score in the 3-minutes against the monster front line of shooting guard /small forward P.J. Tucker and shooting guard Gerald Green. Combine that with the fact that the Suns ended up winning and I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t the last time we saw this ultimate smallball lineup against sub-.500 Eastern Conference teams.
